Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder which involves alternation between manic episodes, causing insomnia, over activity, altered judgment, high risk behaviors and overspending which are interspersed with depressive episodes which can lead to thoughts that life is not worth living. Treatment usually involves cognitive behavioral therapy, family or marital psychotherapy, enlistment of the family in a therapeutic alliance, as well as pharmacotherapy which usually includes major tranquilizers, mood stabilizing medications such as Lithium and Depakote as well as cautiously employed antidepressant medications during depressive episodes with close observation to detect a switch to mania. Voluntary or involuntary hospitalization under the provisions of the Texas Mental Health Code are sometimes necessary to protect and stabilize the condition.
